The Spanish Conversation
Beautiful and rare engraving.
Burin and etching after a painting by Carle Van Loo (1705 - 1765) engraved by Jacques Firmin Beauvarlet (1731 – 1797) great French engraver known especially for his portraits, he engraved after most of the painters of his time. Once his vogue had passed, his works were variously appreciated.

Charles-André Van Loo is a French painter (1705-1765) with an exemplary academic career. Thanks to his historical and religious paintings, he was accepted into the Académie de France in Rome to study, then became an academician in Paris in 1735, appointed official painter to the king in 1762 and director of the Académie in 1763. The Spanish Conversation was exhibited at the 1755 Salon. Beauvarlet made a copy of it in the form of an engraving in 1769. For scene 4 of act II of The Marriage of Figaro, Beaumarchais arranged the Countess, Susanna and the page Cherubino like the painting by Van Loo whose copy he was able to admire.
