CHINA 18TH
Qianlong/Jiaqing Period
Behind him, a gourd empties, releasing bats. If the immortal can represent Li Tieguai, it doesn't matter here. In fact, the scene represents a rebus illustrated by several elements. The bats flying over the Immortal in the sky symbolize good omens.
The scene therefore represents the following wish "May good fortune come down from heaven" 福从天降.
To depict this play on words, some artists use Zhong Kui, but this is not conditional. Indeed, others also use children as the main character, who must nevertheless be under the bats.
