Auguste MAJORELLE (Lunéville 1825 - Nancy, 1879). PLANTER in lacquered ceramic imitating lacquer with a Japanese-style floral decoration in gold on a black background. Elephant head-shaped handles, 2nd half of the 19th century. Height. 33, Diam. 54 cm. Hollow mark: Faiencerie de Toul, initials JA (Jules Aubry, owner of the factory from 1858 to 1898) and SV An identical plant pot but with a different decoration is kept at the Museum of Art and History in Toul. It is reproduced in the catalogue of the exhibition "Colours and Forms. The heritage of the 18th century in the Nancy school. Bibliography: Roselyne BOUVIER in, Couleurs et Formes. Auguste Majorelle, father of Louis Majorelle, set up his workshop in 1858 in Toul where he collaborated with the Toul-Bellevue earthenware factory. In 1861 he moved to Nancy. He invented the technique of lacquering on ceramics which he patented in 1864. Many of his productions feature Japanese-style ornamentation. As a result, Auguste Majorelle established himself as a precursor of the Nancy School and Art Nouveau. Auguste MAJORELLE (Lunéville 1825 - Nancy, 1879).
