"4 Panels From Maffrash Shahsavan - Persia. 19th Century. Vegetable Dyes"
4 panels of Maffrash Shahsavan from Persia. Sumak technique wool on wool. The Sumak technique is the most elaborate of all Middle Eastern weaving techniques. It requires a second weft thread that creates the pattern. Related to embroidery, the weft is oblique and formed in a succession of back and forth. This technique allows the creation of patterns in an ultra-precise manner. Looking at the patterns, one has the visual impression that they are as if chiseled in the material. The 4 panels originally constituted the 4 sides of a large carrying bag called Maffrash. These are among the most precious works of the nomadic populations of the Middle East and the Caucasus... Sublime natural and vegetal shades, of an incredible freshness 150 years old. It seems that the shades contain the eternal light... Circa 1850 - 1870 Good overall condition, some signs of wear.
