"Brooch Depicting A Serpent-headed Dragon Beast, 9th Century"
This bronze brooch looks like a variation of the famous Anglo-Saxon brooch with a staring horse. Instead of the horse type, it is a more dragon-like beast in a similar pose with a serpent's head, a tail curled under the body and a fire-breathing or extended tongue. This rare brooch comes from the Baltic region of Scandinavia, hence eastern Sweden or Finland. Consists of a flat-section discoid body with granulated rim, pin and catch plate at the back. - Literature: Catalogue of Antiquities of the Later Saxon Period: VOL. 1, ANGLO-SAXON ORNAMENTAL METALWORK 700-1100 IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM.
