Portrait of a young Greek woman in Athens costume
Oil on canvas (oval)
Inner dimensions 46 x 38 cm
Frame dimensions 60 x 53.5 cm
This beautiful painting of a young woman with Greek attire can be dated back to the first half of the 19th century. The oval oil on canvas is displayed in an original 19th century frame with red and floral details. The painting is a fine work after Julie Hugo. Born the daughter of a marquis, Hugo was educated in the arts from a young age and studied under Jacques Louis David and François Gérard. Hugo worked with Delacroix and Ingres as well as exhibiting work in her own right, highly unusual for a female artist of the period. Her portrait of the young Greek woman in an Athens costume was exhibited in the Salon of 1833 (Number 1271).
Condition: good condition as visible on pictures, with apparent age wear in the areas of the stretcher.
The frame is from the 19th century, with some age wear but still very beautiful. The frame is sent with the artwork as a gift and is therefore not prone to any damage claim.
