The painting depicts a group of people taking part in a music lesson. The young woman on the left seems captivated by the music she hears; the man dressed in black is probably the teacher, giving the instructions. The instrumentalist is dressed in red while the singer is seated holding the score. The light, which comes from the window, draws our attention to the faces as well as to the teacher's hand with the pointing finger. The play of shadows creates an intimate atmosphere.
Very beautiful achievement. Very beautiful work of drapery and expressive faces. The sets and costumes and headdresses are reminiscent of Venetian fashion.
The painting has been adapted to this magnificent Empire period wooden and gilded stucco frame decorated with palmettes and swans.
The back of the canvas is marked with the canvas manufacturer "BAIAT" in Grenoble. The trade in linen canvases and fabrics between Italy and the manufacturers of Lyon and Grenoble was flourishing at that time.
