Napoleon I After Chaudet, By Sèvres Under Napoleon III, 1869

Imperial Manufacture of Sèvres, dated 1869. Very fine execution, in hard porcelain biscuit, of the bust of Emperor Napoleon I, under the Second Empire, from the series of fifteen busts commissioned from Baron Dominique Vivant Denon, then director general of museums, to honor the dignitaries of the regime, the "Napoleonides".
Here depicted as Hermes, the emperor is seen from the front, with regular features, a lock of hair on his forehead, and a strong chin.
This bust is based on the model by the sculptor Denis-Antoine Chaudet (1763-1810) who provided the model in 1805 to the Manufacture of Sèvres, which served as an official portrait during most of the Empire.
