Rosa Langenegger was born in Steinen in the canton of Schwyz, Switzerland, on May 9, 1880. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to Paris. At the turn of the 20th century, in Paris, she studied under Albert Bartholomé and exhibited at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. Langenegger became a member of the Société nationale des beaux-arts in 1908 and taught for several years in France at the Lycée Fénelon in Paris, before moving to California and teaching at the California College of the Arts and Crafts. Rosa Langenegger was the first woman to receive a Swiss Art Prize, then called a federal scholarship, in 19015.
