"Large Box With Lid, Lacquer, Japan, Meiji Era (1868-1912)."
Large box with wooden lid covered with red and black lacquer in relief, with gilding. The decoration shows a pair of cranes flying over islands where traditional buildings, rocks and pine trees are seen. Sailing ships are depicted at sea, with the majestic Mount Fuji in the background. This type of container has sometimes been described as a wedding box. In Japan, the crane (Tsuru) means good news and is a symbol of longevity (according to legend, it lives 1,000 years), but also of wisdom, fidelity, knowledge and the experience it brings on its distant voyages. It also symbolizes conjugal love and fidelity, as the species is monogamous and mates for life.
