"Claude Bellan .. Oil On Canvas . Signature On The Back .."
Born in Bordeaux in 1933, Claude Bellan began painting in 1952. He encountered the reality of painting in Velazquez, Poussin, Cézanne, Matisse, Bacon, and some artists who came to prominence after the war, such as Bores, Estève and Boissonnet. In 1957, he moved to Paris and met Herta Lebk, also a painter. In the 1950s, when abstraction triumphed, he became interested in landscapes; later, when pop art took over, he worked on self-portraits; and when it came time for installations and conceptual works, he clung to canvas and figuration, convinced that there was a chance for him to achieve what he was looking for... a form of shift and permanent questioning. Claude Bellan expresses himself using the traditional techniques of his art, but the questions he asks have the urgency and acuity of the present time; he gives us something to see and think about, walking off the beaten track and thus forcing the viewer to define himself in relation to him, and here, he joins with force and relevance the great debates that underlie current art.
