Rare Carved Stone Salt Cellar, Auvergne Mid-19th Century, France, Circa 1850
Rare basin in volcanic stone from Besse (France, Sancy, Auvergne). The original use was to salt meat in order to preserve it.
The basin was hand-hewn from a block of stone. A hole had been dug in the side of the bottom of the vat to allow liquid to drain out if necessary, otherwise it was closed by a cork bung.
The weight is about 750 kg.
