"Italian Solfeges: 18th Century Singing Method "
Interesting document on the teaching of singing and music, at the end of the 18th century, fourth edition of the modified and modernized collection. Two major axes of interest are loosened. The period is troubled: in fact the previous editions are for the use of the pages of the royal chapel, as the dedication is to the sovereign. Here the cover page is modified (dedication to French youth) and the recipients of the work... left in the void. We are clearly in 1793, the King has just disappeared, everything is unstable and dangerous. For the musical content, it is fascinating because it informs us about the European masters of the Opera for a man of the 18th century, and the hierarchy is not ours. The airs from which the exercises are taken here are those of Leo, Durante, Porpora, Scarlatti (domenico), Davide Perez, all Italians, often from Naples (it is the European center of music teaching). Added to this is Hasse, "the divine Saxon" as he was nicknamed at the time, who reigned over the Austrian court for decades. If all are well known, the name of Davide Perez is a discovery, at this rank. In fact, the appointed composer of the King of Portugal, a large part of his work disappeared in the fire of the Palace of Lisbon during the earthquake. We are only beginning to discover his surviving works which are splendid. In this collection, it is the most difficult and ornate airs that are from his pen. And therefore no Mozart... which should make us think about the veracity of the history of music commonly conveyed.... It is a fascinating document on the teaching methods of a song that reached its peak in the ornate style. Large volume in formag format, bearing the printed signature of the widow Naderman, wife of an excellent French composer ( harpist ), merchant of musical instruments and musical supplies, as well as another merchant (the stock having certainly changed hands in the revolutionary storm). Oblong format, typical of 18th century scores. Used condition (damaged spine)
