Object description :

"Lacroux Pierre – The Harvesters – Oil On Canvas – Signed And Dated (19)58"
Large oil on canvas from the late 1950s, entitled "The Harvesters".
In the foreground on the left side, we see 2 women, one of whom is seated. Behind them on the right side, stand 2 men, who carry the harvest tools. They are placed in front of a bright yellow field.
The composition, the refined shapes and the bright colors make this painting a solar work, which inevitably stops the eye.
The work is signed and dated (19)58 at the bottom right. The name and address of the painter appear on a label on the back of the painting.
The work is in excellent condition, without any retouching, clean. It is framed with a simple unvarnished wooden strip, like the majority of modern works.

The artist
Pierre Lacroux was born in Montpellier in 1909. He studied English while taking classes at the school of fine arts in his city. Then he attended the studio of André Lhote. In 1936, he moved to Privas (Ardèche), where he lived until his death in 1993. He was an English teacher and at the same time had a sustained activity as a painter. He did not want to sell his works but exhibited them regularly in Privas and Lyon.
Influenced by the structures and play of colors of cubism, fauvism, and artists such as Matisse or Derain, his style continued to evolve, to the point of abstraction. Lacroix drew his energy and inspiration from the landscapes of the south of France.
Pierre Lacroix's works are notably exhibited at the Musée Fabre in Montpellier, and have been the subject of a certain number of public sales. His paintings are nevertheless much rarer than his gouaches.
