This sculpture depicts a soldier who died of exhaustion after running from Marathon to Athens to tell his fellow citizens of the Greek victory over the Persians in 490 BC.
The marble, presented at the Salon of 1822, was commissioned by King Louis-Philippe on September 25, 1831, for the Tuileries Gardens to match Pradier's Prometheus. Entered the collections of the Louvre Museum in 1877.
