This is most likely a Chinese work from the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century, intended for export to European countries.
The case is rectangular in shape, affecting the shape of the cigars contained.
The case opens on both ends. The first compartment can hold six cigars.
The second, smaller compartment was probably intended to hold matches.
The entire case is covered with a magnificent Chinese decoration of characters evolving in the middle of foliage, flowers and fruits. There is a man kneeling in front of a lady with an umbrella, two children playing, a man picking fruit for a woman, a man blowing smoke forming a chimera, birds evoking phoenixes, a pavilion, etc.
The lids are decorated with a bust of a man.
A frieze of pearls highlights the opening of each compartment.
The case is not hallmarked but has been tested with a touchstone.
Superb case, very richly decorated with an interesting double-lid construction.
