Object description :

"19th Italian Patinated Bronze Grand Tour Sculpture Apollo Citaredo"
Beautiful bronze sculpture with brown patina depicting the Apollo Citaredo, Roman workshop of the second half of the 19th century. Original yellow marble base.
The sculpture reproduces the god Apollo seated, in an attitude of rest, on a rocky spur. The god wears a long sleeved chiton, whose edges rest on the legs, held high on the waist by a belt, and a himation (cloak) that falls from his shoulders. The divinity is captured in the gesture of the liricine (lyre player), with his left hand he holds the cithara, while in the right the plectrum. The head, on which rests a crown of laurel leaves, is turned to the left, intent on
looking at the musical instrument, and has flowing hair arranged in bands behind the nape of the neck, with curls falling loosely on the shoulders. The original statue, in red porphyry and marble, is part of the Farnese collection and is located in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. The bronze is part of that production of high quality "souvenirs" produced for the rich travellers of the Grand Tour visiting Italy. It is, however, a subject rarely reproduced.
Excellent state of conservation.
