"A Louis XVI Mahogany Tric-trac Table Forming A Desk Lat 18th Century "
Louis XVI period Tric-trac table in mahogany and mahogany veneer. Rectangular quadrilateral in shape, its banded belt with fluted connecting dice rests on a base with four deeply fluted tapered legs, strangled at the tops and pinched at the bases. A two-piece removable top tops the unit. This is flanked by an overhanging flat strip with rounded edges, one longitudinal edge of which is slightly flattened on the main face. This is sheathed in cognac morocco, gilded with petit fer in a mahogany veneer frame to accentuate its function as a middle desk. The reverse side is upholstered in a soft green wool billiard cloth for shuffling cards and throwing dice. Once the board has been removed, the game rack and its side troughs appear. The main one houses the tric-trac set itself, in natural sycamore marquetry stained on mahogany. The secondary ones were formerly used to hold cones, tokens, cards and dice.
The generous dimensions of this tric-trac table enhance its function as a desk.
Dimensions: width 121.8cm - depth 72.6cm - height 76.4cm under headband 61.8cm.
Trictrac was a popular board game at court and in aristocratic circles in France in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is one of the games of reasoned chance, like backgammon, which is played on a regular basis.
