"Italian Mythological Painting “cérès” By Michelangelo Maestri (1779-1812) Empire Period "
The Italian painter Michelangelo MAESTRI (1779-1812) was inspired in his works, in gouache on black support, by the frescoes discovered in Pompeii and Herculaneum during the 18th century as well as the frescoes made for the great Roman palaces of the Renaissance by Raphael and his pupil Giulio Romano. His gouaches were very popular, for their careful representations of mythological themes and very appreciated by the aristocrats making their Grand Tour in Italy. The well-framed painting, with marquise, probably represents "Ceres" goddess of agriculture, incarnation of the abundance of the earth. She is crowned with ears of wheat, winged, supported by an enormous crab. She makes the gesture of distributing the contents of a basket full of fruits and vegetables (another version of the cornucopia). The painting is signed in pen at the bottom right. In good used condition, reflections are visible on the photos and are due to the protective glass.
