Victor Paillard is the son of Charles Paillard, a small landowner, and Denise Louise Victoire de Chaumont. Staying with his sister Mrs. Baudin in By-Thomery (Seine-et-Marne), his artistic talents were noticed by the Count of Guzmán[Which one?], who sent him to improve his skills in Paris. After a stint at the Royal School of Free Drawing and training as a chaser, he was a student of Jean-François Denière and a collaborator of Ferdinand Barbedienne. Quickly recognized as one of the best bronze founders of his time, he created around 1830 a house of art objects and furnishings that would employ up to a hundred people in the mid-19th century. He received numerous official commissions, notably during the decoration of the hotel of the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Quai d'Orsay in Paris. Exhibitor in France and abroad, he was appointed member of the jury of the Universal Exhibition of 1855 in Paris, and exhibited out of competition.
