Pierluigi Spadolini for 1P (Permaflex), 'Boccio' dining set with table and six chairs, polyurethane resin, Italy, 1972
This dining set was designed by Italian architect and designer (1922-2000) Pierluigi Spadolini for 1P. In the 1960s and 1970s there was an explosion of shapes, colors and materials in the decorative arts. The use of organic and plastic forms in this design placed the table in the Pop Art era.
Polyurethane resin, used for the entire construction, allowed Spadolini to create geometric and organic shapes with a smooth finish. The base is molded in a concave shape, resulting in a streamlined, curvilinear layout. The six chairs fit perfectly on the table top when not in use. The chairs, together with the table, form a solid unit when closed, like the petals of a flower closing at night. The deep black color, in combination with the material used and the final construction, means that it can be placed as a visual statement in interiors.
