Series of eight watercolors depicting the "Mexican Campaign" (1861-1867), signed by Charles-Dominique LAHALLE known as Oscar, born in Nancy in 1834 and died in Paris in 1909. Military painter who exhibited at the Salon from 1873 to 1876. Officer, he participated in the Italian Campaign (1859-1862), the Mexican Campaign (1861-1867), as Staff Captain of Marshal Bazaine. These notebooks are of great historical interest during the French expedition to Mexico, showing us the ordering of tactics or strategic reasoning, but also because Oscar Lahalle notes familiar, everyday events (the climate, fears, dysentery, mosquitoes, accommodation, the canteen)... To illustrate his point, Lahalle draws in pencil or watercolor, scenes taken from life, riders, etc. It is a real report as a reporter would do today. He sees everything, the typical scene, the essential and the superfluous. He tries to render everything, his line is light, generous. The colors are harmonious. He does not omit any detail but does not get lost in mentioning them... In perfect condition Private collection. Dimensions: h.29 cm x l.23 cm.
