A rosewood and amaranth louis XV period chest of drawer stamped Chevallier, openingwith by two large drawers separated by a cross. Sets foliage and leaf gilt bronze and gilt bronze handles. Marble top. Louis XV period.

Marble top (cracks and restorations).
Stamped on the top under the marble CHEVALLIER and JME (Jurande des Menuisiers Ebénistes)
Louis XV period. 18th century.
Unrestored (Some missing veneers and cracks on the sides).

Jean-Mathieu Chevallier (1694-1768) is a Parisian cabinetmaker of the eighteenth century who had a great success during his lifetime. He is the brother of Charles Chevallier, also cabinetmaker talent recognized.
He began his career as a furniture dealer rue de Grenelle, "La Croix Chevallie." He received his Master on March 5, 1743.
He became prosperous and received orders for several aristocraitiques residences such as the hotel and the Duke of Talmont Castle Villegenis, which belonged to Louis-Anne de Bourbon-Condé.
His presence, in 1745, among the creditors of André Charles Boulle II may indicate a collaboration between the two artisans.
Jean-Mathieu Chevallier said the Elder, stamped chests, corner cupboards, secretaries, chests and cabinets Louis XV, the inlay work is always of the highest quality. It is known for its very decorative and very floral marquetry worked, but it has also made inlaid with geometric motifs, including its convenient reminiscent of the form "tombeau" of the Regency.
