He studied at the Academy of Arts in Amsterdam where he was a student of J. Schoenmaker-Doyer and V. Bing. Initially turned towards seascapes and river landscapes, he later specialized in urban landscape scenes. He lived in Amsterdam until 1856, then in Brussels, where he obtained Belgian nationality and became one of the best Belgian urban landscape painters in the 19th century. For his urban representations, Carabain produced, in addition to those of the Netherlands and Belgium, picturesque landscapes of Italian, German, French and Austrian cities. He chose views of old districts, market squares and ramparts, often with rows of facades animated by characters busy with their occupations, in a style close to that of François Bossuet. Jacques Carabain participated in numerous exhibitions between 1852 and 1893: The Hague and Amsterdam, London, Dunkirk, Algiers, Nîmes, Sydney, Melbourne, Lyon, Chaumont, Caracas, Melbourne, Adelaide and several Belgian exhibitions. He won medals at the London exhibitions in 1873 and 1874, Dunkirk in 1876, Sydney and Melbourne in 1881. He also stayed in Australia from 1885. His works are present in numerous museums and public collections: Auckland Art Gallery, Bonn, Brussels - Museum of the City of Brussels (Maison du Roi) and Ixelles Museum, Ypres - City Museum, Maaseik - John Selbach Museum, Melbourne - La Trobe Library, Philadelphia - Philadelphia Museum of Art, Prague - Rudolfinum Museum, Poggiodomo.
