The Fountain of the Turtles (Fontana delle Tartarughe) is one of the most elegant and famous fountains in Rome, located in Piazza Mattei in the Sant’Angelo district. It was created at the end of the 16th century at the request of the Mattei family, who owned a house near the square. The architect of the project was Giacomo della Porta, while the sculptures were made by the Florentine sculptor Taddeo Landini.
The fountain was built between 1581 and 1588 and features a square basin with four bronze youths leaning on the heads of dolphins. However, the turtles, which became the main feature of the fountain, were added in 1658 during a restoration ordered by Pope Alexander VII. These turtles symbolize wisdom and tranquility and harmoniously complete the composition of the fountain.
There are several legends associated with the fountain. According to one of them, Duke Mattei commissioned the fountain to demonstrate his wealth and influence to impress the father of his future bride. Once the fountain was completed, he supposedly showed it from the window of his villa, then immediately had the window bricked up so that no one else could view the fountain from that spot.
The Fountain of the Turtles is a unique example of Roman Renaissance architecture and art, drawing attention with its original sculptural composition and symbolism.
