Renée Aspe, born December 3, 1922 in Toulouse, died September 17, 1969 in Toulouse, is a French painter who lived and worked in particular in Toulouse and Sète. Renée Aspe had an eclectic body of work, very appreciated during her lifetime. Many of the themes of her inspiration were provided by numerous trips in France and abroad, to Morocco, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Portugal and the United States, where she won the Grand Prix de New York. She participated in the Salons des Artistes Méridionaux and exhibited regularly in Toulouse galleries from 1945 until her death in 1969: at the Galerie du Taur in 1960, 1963 and 1968, and at the Galerie Chappe in 1961 and 1967. The Musée des Augustins in Toulouse organized an exhibition on Renée Aspe in 1970, as well as a retrospective in 1971. About ten years ago, the artist was the subject of a major retrospective by the city of Toulouse. The Espace Croix-Baragnon in Toulouse also dedicated an exhibition to her at the end of 1999, on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of her death. She painted children's faces, street scenes, landscapes, still lifes and seascapes, and described in particular her two home cities: Toulouse, especially before 1960, and Sète. Renée Aspe delivered a personal vision of things and people, through a style that easily characterizes her, associated with frank colors, with assertive features and clear contours.
