Self-portrait in a velvet cap with plume Bartsch no.020.
This collection has been verified thus by the British Museum Print Room.
This print is from a large private collection from France.
This excellent-quality print was made in1880 on Japanese paper. Rembrandt himself used Japanese paper, sometimes ivory coloured. It is often smooth and shiny, while Dutch paper has a rougher, matte surface. 50% of this collection is on Japanese, and 50% is on Dutch laid paper as described.
Historically, many collectors stamped or signed prints they acquired, known as ‘Collectors Marks’, and some from this collection have hand-written titles in French below the etching.
