We are grateful to Alastair Laing, the current expert on François Boucher, who has confirmed to us that this is a fine painting by François Boucher, and that in his opinion the Cupid is by the hand of the master, the background probably having been executed in Boucher's workshop.
This painting in its original carved and gilded Louis XV frame was published in 1976 and 1980 by Ananoff and Wildenstein as the autograph work of François Boucher (see bibliography). The composition refers to one of the lower corners of a painting in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, which was engraved by Duflos as Vénus tranquille (see Ananoff/Wildenstein, 1976, no. 217).
