Jules Breton was a student of Ingres and Vernet. He was the author of many large Salon paintings with a realistic then naturalist sensibility. His main themes are peasant life, processions and the great Breton pardons. He was recognized in his time in the United States where many of his paintings are scattered in museums and among collectors. He discovered Cernay in 1865 and worked to accurately translate the gestures of the harvesters for a painting exhibited at the Mesdag Museum in The Hague. He painted in the summer in Douarnenez and met a group of poets and writers there. He was very honored during his lifetime: Commander of the Legion of Honor, member of the Jury at the Salons and Member of the Institute.
