Rare Pewter PITCHER, shouldered shape, oblique plinth foot, straight goblet and S-shaped thumb with molded crest.
Control mark overlapped by the mark of Louis CLERET, received master before 1756: crowned hammer / LC / E.
Gauging countermark on the inside bottom: ST.C (For "à la mesure de St Cloud"?).
Height: 22.5 cm
ETAMPES, Second third of the 18th century

Curious unlisted gauging countermark.
In superb condition and of beautiful quality of material.
The typology is that of the pitchers of Paris and the Ile-de-France
Let us recall in passing that these pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., had to be checked periodically by the royal or ecclesiastical authorities to ensure "good measure" for the consumer, but in fact, this regulation was rarely applied and pitchers bearing gauging punches are very rare. The metric system appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century and took several decades to establish itself due to the resistance to change shown by users, but little by little these uniform cylindrical measures would end up replacing the pitchers which, it is true, presented a variety of interesting shapes and characteristics of their place of manufacture, but also an infinite number of different gaugings from one city to another and often even from one village to another, however close they were. This significantly complicated trade...!
