"18th Century Magnifying Glass / Monocle"
Magnifying glass in its rooted leather case, 18th century or earlier. The body of the magnifying glass is made of a metal plate (copper or brass) stamped in intaglio with geometric patterns, the V-shaped grip with ringed ends, the fasteners made of a simple coiled wire. The glass is in good condition, some micro chips around the edge, the surface remains clear and I deliberately did not clean it. Leather case with friezes and central flower with a small iron, the gilding is missing and the edge of the lid partially torn. I have only seen one sale result on the internet (lot 654 sale of the contents of the Château de Clevant in October 2022, see last photo), and no similar item for sale. Firm price. Payment by check or bank transfer. Shipping costs 12 euros Colissimo recommended or Mondial Relay for France, other countries contact me. NB: The monocle was introduced by Baron Philipp Von Strosch around 1720. Claude Samuel's virtual site offers fairly exhaustive documentation of the history of glasses, rich in lessons concerning its evolution over the course of technological developments, style, fashion and culture.
