"Eugène De Barbériis (1851-1937) The Old Farm In A Village In The Var"
The dazzling summer light and the peaceful and bucolic atmosphere of the villages of Provence at the end of the 19th century for this oil on panel by the painter Eugène de Barbériis. The work is offered in a beautiful sculpted frame that measures 52.5 cm by 64.5 cm and 33 cm by 46 cm for the panel alone. Made in a generous and creamy material, it represents a farm animated by chickens and a rooster, in the background a bell tower in a village and in the distance, perched on a hill a Fort, certainly that of Six Fours near Sanary where the artist had his habits. In good condition, it is signed lower right.
A student of Bouguerreau, Tony Robert-Fleury, Detaille and Berne-Bellecour, Eugène de Barbériis exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1878 to 1901. At the beginning, he mainly presented subjects showing the daily life of soldiers: "en faction, Décembre" in 1890, "Une corvée" in 1892, "Egarés" 1893, "Fraternité" 1894. The Museum of Fine Arts in Marseille has kept "Amour et Patrie" by him. He returned to Marseille in 1890 and turned to landscape painting. In 1912, he showed 80 paintings illustrating the city of Marseille and its surroundings at the Galerie Centrale d'art moderne in Marseille.
