The Judgment of Paris is a mythological episode involving the goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. It foreshadows the Trojan War.
To the wedding of Peleus and Thetis on Olympus, all the gods are invited except Eris, goddess of Discord. To take revenge, she throws them a golden apple with the words “For the most beautiful”: the apple of discord. Three goddesses then claim the fruit, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. In order to put an end to the dispute, Zeus orders Hermes to take the goddesses to Mount Ida, with Paris, the Trojan prince, choosing the winner.
The young man finally grants the apple to Aphrodite who promised him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world (Hélène). Thus will the Trojan War begin with the kidnapping of Helen.
