"Alfred Gobert (1822-1894) Venus Jewelry Box In Enamel"
Large 19th century Renaissance style box from the Napoleon III period attributed to the enamel artist Alfred Thompson Gobert (1822-1894) around 1890 with a rectangular structure in molded wood, the four cavetto faces and the top of the lid are decorated with enamel plates painted in grisaille with gold highlights on a deep burgundy background depicting a rich Bérain decoration animated with leafy scrolls dominated on the top by a polylobed medallion with the figure of Venus dressed in an antique drape, the whole set in gilded bronze frames. Good general condition, lock and its original key with openwork pattern in good working order. Dimensions: 22 cm long X 19 cm high X 17 cm wide. Alfred Thompson Gobert (1822-1894) worked at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres between 1849 and 1891. A painter of figures and then director of art works, he notably created a jewelry box kept at the Château de Fontainebleau (in the Pope's apartments) also decorated with plaques depicting cupids. Gobert is also the author of the allegories of Day and Night on the ewer of the Empress Eugénie sold in 2016 and pre-empted by the Palais de Compiègne.
