David Allan (1744-1796) - A Study for the Central Figure in 'The Stool of Repentance', a beautiful and expressive 18th-century chalk drawing of a weeping woman which is a study for the central figure in 'The Stool of Repentance' David Allan (13 February 1744 – 6 August 1796) David Allan was a Scottish painter, draughtsman and illustrator, best known for his historical subjects and genre works. Allan was born in Alloa, on the Firth of Forth, and attended the Foulis Academy in Glasgow for seven years. In 1767 he moved to Rome, where he lived for ten years; this was the most successful period of his life. In Rome, Allen painted ambitious historical paintings, portraits, caricatures and genre scenes. Returning to London in 1777, he spent two years trying to establish himself. Failing and ill, he returned to Scotland where he specialised in painting family groups. He also produced book illustrations and was appointed Master of the Trustees' Academy, Edinburgh.
