Object description :

"Hakama Traditional Skirt Japan Late 19th Century"
The Hakama is a pair of pleated skirt-like pants worn over a kimono. The Hakama is similar to a large culotte skirt and is part of the traditional Japanese attire. There are two distinct types of Hakama, one is the Andon Hakama, which is almost identical to a wide skirt, this is the women's version. The other is the Umanori Hakama which resembles a pair of wide pants, this is the version worn by men. The women's Hakama is commonly worn at school graduations or any other academic ceremony. The women's Hakama is worn just below the bust line, while the men's Hakama is tied at the back with an obi belt. The Hakama presented here consists of two pleated panels, open, but attached to the belt, it is made in a light gray silk damask with foliage and flowers in tones, framed by a range of gray, purple, blue, turquoise, black and ecru, embroidered with silk flowers on the more colorful parts. Some parts of these panels are pleated as is proper on the Hakama. The total height of this skirt is 96 cm. The waist is 114 cm, the height of the ecru belt is 15 cm. The span of these panels measures approximately 132 cm each. This garment has not been cleaned, traces of stains are visible, but there are no holes or tears. (see details in the photos). Good condition of use and conservation, in its own juice and patina, has not been cleaned.
