Elegant and large pewter CIMARRE in baluster shape with high pedestal, quarter-round goblet, domed top lid and acorn thumb, fitted with a fixed handle and an accolade swing.
Master's mark listed but here incompletely struck and worn by Philibert LESPINETTE received master around 1680: crowned hammer / (P).(L).N.
On the outside bottom, the control mark most likely including a royal symbol was deliberately bruised during the revolutionary period as is often seen.
Height: 28.8 cm.
JOINVILLE or MONTBARD, End of the 17th century.
(This master was active in these two centres and the illegible control mark therefore does not allow us to specify the one from which this cimarra came),
In very good condition,
The cimarres were produced mainly in Champagne, we have however noted a few examples in Ile-de-France and Franche-Comté. They were intended for serving wine at the table when one wanted to honour one's guests somewhat.
The one presented here was obtained using the longitudinal casting technique in use until around the 1700s. In fact, we can see inside the two vertical welds of the two symmetrical parts taken out of the mould composed of two shells, as well as at the inside bottom the pellet obstructing the hole left by the central axis of the casting. Then, from the very beginning of the 18th century, the masters abandoned this technique and adopted that of radial casting.
