The artist
Nicolas Chapuy was born in Paris in 1790 and died in the same city in 1858. First trained at the École Polytechnique and an officer in the corps of naval engineers, he then became a lithographer, specializing in drawing monuments. He is known for having produced a series of lithographs devoted to the cathedrals of France. From 1840, he traveled to several European countries, including Germany. Our drawing most likely dates from this period.
Nicolas Chapuy is a romantic designer, who lets his subjectivity shine through in his works. He strives to create atmospheres rather than to reproduce the smallest detail.
His works are rare on the market.
