Oil on panel depicting a scene from the Normandy coast: several people are gathered around a boat lying dry on the shore. Higher up, we can see the outline of the white cliffs typical of certain parts of the Normandy coast. The sky fills 2/3 of the composition. It is very worked, in the thickness as well as in the shades of gray and blue.
The work is signed lower right. It is placed in a varnished wooden frame, with a gilded wooden passepartout. The whole is in very good condition.

The artist
Jean-Etienne Karnec was born in Austria but painted in France. He specialized in seascapes, harbor landscapes, and representations of Venice. He represented Normandy a lot. His style is very recognizable: he makes the contours disappear in a thick paste that softens the shapes. The skies occupy a large place in his compositions.
Karnec painted mainly small formats, on panel or cardboard.
