Beautiful Louis XV period armchair with canes in moulded and carved walnut, decorated with flowers. Our armchair stands on curved scrolled legs.

Elegant Lyon work from the Louis XV period circa 1765, attributed to Nogaret with Antoine Benoit as sculptor.

Biography:

Pierre Nogaret was born in Paris in 1718 and would remain the undisputed master of the Lyonnais seat under the reign of Louis XV. His biography can only be based on Lyon parish registers, as all other documents were destroyed in 1871 when the archives of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris were burnt down by the Commune. However, it is thought that after an apprenticeship in Paris, probably with a great master, he left the capital in 1743 to settle in Lyon, where he continued his training with the Lyon master François Girard, based in Petite rue Saint Romain.
In 1744, he married Anne Muguet, a native of Roanne, and obtained his master's degree in Lyon in 1745.
From 1745 to 1761, he had fifteen children, many of whom died in infancy. He does not seem to have invested much time in the life of his guild, of which he was only elected master-guard with Mathieu Lerbet on 9 February 1771.
He died on 23 August of the same year and was buried in the ‘cave de Saint-Roch’. On his death, his children were placed under the guardianship of master cabinetmaker Étienne Vanderheyden. In 1772, his wife sold the ‘fond de boutique’ to master carpenter Nicolas Parmentier, who continued his production by affixing his stamp to some of his unfinished works.
