Oil on canvas 46x55 cm "The old cherry tree in Poullan sur Mer" circa 1930
Signed lower left, titled on the back, Exhibition label at the Salon d'Automne
Student and collaborator of Désire Lucas, Marie Reol exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français since 1907.
Born in Cantal, she adopted Brittany with her master whom she would end up marrying in 1942.
She painted many Breton landscapes, she was also appreciated for her bouquets and portraits including that of Désiré Lucas, which earned her a gold medal in 1921.
Poullan's landscape is characteristic of her work: a sensitive post-impressionist touch, a large sky evoking the Breton climate and an assertive structure.
Familiar with the place, she does not paint a picturesque scene, but draws our attention to the old cherry tree, she notes on the back of the painting "the cherry tree has been cut down". She presents this canvas at the Salon d'Automne, which confirms her interest and attachment to this work. Bibliography: Benezit, Dictionnaire Edouard Joseph, Schurr,...
