Oil on canvas 25x32 cm "Still life with knife" circa 1920
Signed lower right, exhibition label on the back
It was as a sculptor that Charles Malfray acquired great fame, obtaining the Blumenthal Prize in 1920.
Recognition of his talent by the general public was late but Maillol imposed him as his successor in teaching at the Académie Ranson and the Public Authorities gave him important commissions.
In addition to his sculpted work, Charles Malfray painted in oil throughout his life, landscapes, seascapes and still lifes of a beautiful style, inherited from Cézanne as in this beautiful painting, well structured and at the same time delicate.
His works are in many French and foreign museums.
