Object description :

" Verdure Tapestry, Workshops Of La Marche (aubusson Region), Late 17th - Early 18th Century"
- This tapestry, in wool and silk, offers us a real window onto a greenery of character. The exposed vegetation, treated with realism, appears with great force and vitality; the animated shape of the tree trunks hollowed out by cavities, the abundant appearance of the numerous foliage, the luminous power of light tones juxtaposed in contrast with dark greens and browns. The eye gets lost with delight in the many woven details; a watercourse, tree stumps, known plant species (thistles, irises, etc.), two perched birds, a background with a bell tower and mountainous reliefs.

- The originality of this tapestry also lies in its wide border which further enhances its decorative effect. This type of framing is characteristic of 17th century weavings which, under the influence of Flanders, were equipped with a border that took on increasing importance. The delicately drawn border is decorated here with bouquets and falls of flowers (roses, tulips, etc.) and fruits (grapes), goldwork elements mixed with draperies, all on a brown background. The frame has, at the four cardinal points, elegant cartouches imitating wrought metal. Each one holds a medallion in which a tulip blooms. Pretty detail; the border itself is framed by a frieze with three pearls completing the highly decorative character of the latter.
