The work was recently cleaned and re-varnished by the ROLLIN Gallery in Rouen Very early on,
Marcel Couchaux was noticed by the painters of the Rouen School: DELATTRE, HENOQUE, SUZANNE, LOUVRIER, DUMONT, among others… In 1906, G. Dubosc, a famous Rouen critic of the time, said of him: “His refined colorist palette is particularly fond of gray harmonies but remains colorful, and his knitted and skillful style juxtaposing and intertwining the loops, is more strongly reminiscent of the work of LE SIDANER” At the age of 32, Marcel Couchaux entered the Rouen Museum In 1914, he exhibited at the "Société Normande de Peinture Moderne" alongside HODE, DUMONT, DUFY, UTRILLO and VLAMINK. He exhibited successfully in various painting societies until 1934. The canvas presented here reveals a still life, a style very rarely treated by this painter, showing a very worked paste, "knitted" as they said at the time. It most likely dates from his first period during which he painted with a brush before the "knife" became increasingly important during his second period dated by François LESPINASSE, from 1910 to 1925.
