"Paul Morchain (1876-1939) Oil On Cardboard "boats In Douarnenez" Brittany "
Oil on cardboard by Paul Morchain, signed lower right. Dimensions 55X45cm visible and 65X55 cm with the frame "Boats in the bay of Douarnenez". A student at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, he was appointed marine painter in 1921. Adopted by Finistère, he fell in love with Cornouaille and dedicated his life to the representation of its landscapes and ports. From Douarnenez (his "home port") to Treboul, Morchain was able to transcribe the atmospheric effects of the Breton sky to immortalize port life, old holds, sailboats and tuna boats returning from fishing. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1906, where he won several awards before a gold medal in 1920. Our painting is typical of his seascapes with in particular very successful light and sky effects and their reflections on the sea.
