Important Antique Treen French Tobacco Jar & Match Safe Maison Carrée & Arènes Nîmes

An extremely rare and important French carved wood tobacco jar in the form of the Arènes de Nîmes; the cover surmounted with a match safe in the form of the Maison Carrée which is to be found in the southern French city of Nimes. The lid of the match safe with striker. Carved with repetitive Fleur de Lys motifs. The edge of the rim stamped “AUGUSTE” & ******* (illegible). Genuine age patina and nice polish. 23.5 cm in height. Dating from the nineteenth century.

In about 4-7 AD,  the Maison Carrée was dedicated or rededicated to Gaius Caesar and Lucius Caesar, grandsons and adopted heirs of Augustus.
