"Baoulé Pulley - Ivory Coast, Mid-20th Century"
Light wood - visible shocks, wear. These objects were part of the bride's dowry. They were passed down from mother to daughter. These stirrups have the particularity of being decorated. Either with a human head, often female, or with masks. These pieces enter the world of ritual. The loom could be compared to a metaphor for primordial speech: The teeth evoke the comb and the tongue that constantly goes back and forth in the mouth, the shuttle; the pulley, from which come the characteristic creaking of the loom, has as its counterpart the larynx where the sounds are formed. Located in front of the weaver, these figures fixed on the pulleys maintain a dialogue with him.
