"Religious Sculptures In Carved Wood "
Saints, or Christ and Virgin, baroque in polychrome and gilded carved wood from Mediterranean Europe. They emerge from the clouds from below the waist. He, dressed in a belted tunic, his left hand placed on his heart, his arm holds the coat with the wide, moving folds typical of the baroque. He has his right arm raised in a supple gesture, his palm half-opened inwards (fingertips are missing, see photos). The coat is decorated with golden foliage on a brown background, the hair is sculpted lively, punctuated by beautiful undulations. The saint (or virgin) has her hands flat, placed one on top of the other, her head slightly tilted, her gaze directed downwards in an attitude of humility and peace. The coat decorated with golden foliage scrolls on a blue background has a wide movement just like the veil which seems to be inflated by a breath of wind. The eyes are made of glass. Labels on the back. Shards of gilding (especially the top of the veil) and polychromy. Beautiful compositions.
