Palekh box from the Soviet Union era. Author's work. Signed by the artist Khristoforova. Hand-painted depicting a scene from rural life in Russia in the 19th century.
The Palekh technique is a traditional Russian art of painting lacquer miniatures on papier-mâché, originating in the village of Palekh in the Vladimir region. This style became famous in the 20th century, but its roots go back to ancient Russian icon-painting traditions.
History
Originally, the masters of Palekh were renowned for their icon painting, beginning in the 17th century. However, after the October Revolution of 1917 and the ban on religious art, icon painters sought new forms of expression. They transferred their skills to a new form of decorative art, creating miniatures on lacquered boxes and other items.
Key Characteristics
Subjects: Palekh miniatures often depict scenes from Russian fairy tales, folk epics, literary works, as well as historical and folklore motifs. Popular themes include landscapes, rural life scenes, and images of peasants and hunters.
Technique: The main material for creating these items is papier-mâché, which is coated with multiple layers of lacquer for durability. The painting is done in tempera, and after completion, each miniature is lacquered again, giving the work a deep, almost glass-like sheen.
Color Palette: A rich and vibrant color palette is used, typically on a black background. Palekh is distinguished by fine lines, meticulous detail, and elegant figures.
Artist’s Signature: Each work is usually signed by the artist, adding value and confirming its authenticity.
Purpose
Palekh miniature painting is still considered a highly artistic craft that preserves the traditions of Russian culture and attracts the attention of collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide.
