Coral, silver, gilded metal altar crucifix, Trapani (Sicily), 17th and 18th century. Moulded dark red marble support base, with an architecturally shaped plinth in gilded copper leaf applied to a wooden support, featuring several decorative orders: a silver shell motif, a shield engraved with the Marian monogram in a cartouche of rocaille volutes, a silver cherub head, and Mediterranean red coral inserts in the shape of bars and small commas. Trapani 17th century.
The cross, from the 18th century, with its ends decorated with naturalistic motifs in openwork and chiseled silver, is inserted into the base and adorned with a trompe-l'oeil in tortoiseshell. The figure of Christ on the cross, with crown of thorns, is in silver according to the four-nail type, accompanied by a silver memento mori which, according to tradition, symbolises the redemption of man from original sin. Two flying angels carved in silver in the round support the icon of the Vera and the titulus crucis in silver.
